COMBb2's AI Colorize tool adds realistic color to black-and-white photographs using a neural network trained on millions of images. The AI analyzes image content - sky, skin, foliage, clothing, objects - and applies historically plausible colors automatically. Perfect for restoring old family photos and bringing historical images to life. All processing runs in your browser.

Common Use Cases

  • Family photo restoration
Add color to old black-and-white family photos for reprinting or digital sharing.
  • Historical image colorization
Bring historical photographs to life with realistic color for education or media.
  • Creative projects
Transform B&W images into color for artistic, editorial, or commercial use.
  • Genealogy and heritage
Colorize ancestral photographs to make history feel more immediate and personal.
  • Film and media production
Colorize archival footage frames for documentary and historical content.

How It Works

The neural network analyzes the grayscale image to identify objects, textures, and scene context (sky, vegetation, skin, fabric, etc.). It then predicts likely colors for each region based on patterns learned from millions of color photographs. The result is applied as a color overlay on the original luminance data, producing natural-looking colorization.

Why Privacy Matters Here

Family photos and historical images are deeply personal. Cloud colorization services require uploading these irreplaceable memories to third-party servers. COMBb2 colorizes entirely on your device - your family photos, ancestor portraits, and personal archives never leave your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the colors historically accurate?+
The AI predicts plausible colors based on image content, but cannot know the true original colors. Skin tones, sky, and vegetation are generally accurate. Clothing and object colors are approximations. The results are meant to be evocative rather than forensically accurate.
Does it work on all black-and-white photos?+
It works best on well-exposed photos with clear subject matter. Very faded, damaged, or extremely low-contrast photos may produce less vivid results. For best results, enhance contrast first using the Adjust or Enhance tools.
Can I adjust the colors after colorization?+
Yes. After colorizing, you can use the Adjust tool to tweak saturation, warmth, and other color properties. Download the colorized result and process it through Adjust or Filters.
How long does colorization take?+
Processing time depends on image size and your device. A typical photo takes 15-45 seconds. The AI model is loaded on first use, so the first image may take slightly longer.
Are my photos uploaded?+
No. The colorization AI runs entirely in your browser. Your family photos and personal images never leave your device.
