Every photography tutorial on the internet will tell you that overcast days produce beautiful, soft, diffused light. "No harsh shadows!" they say. "Perfect for portraits!" they say. "Golden hour is overrated!" they say, apparently while living somewhere with excellent cloud cover and no emotional attachment to the concept of color.
Then you actually photograph something on an overcast day and the results look like a Victorian-era daguerreotype, except less charming and more like evidence of a crime committed in a hospital cafeteria.
This happened to a colleague of mine last spring. She organized a community garden opening, hired a photographer (herself, because budgets are fictional), and had 200 people show up on a perfectly overcast day. The shots were compositionally lovely.
