Kindle wants a 1.6:1 ratio at minimum 2500 pixels on the longest side. KDP Print wants bleed and trim dimensions calculated from your specific page count. Hardcover adds spine width into the equation, which changes depending on paper stock. Audiobook distributors want a perfect square at 3000x3000. And if you want to pitch your book to libraries through OverDrive, they have their own entirely separate specification document that reads like a tax form.

Priya's Prague artist had delivered one master file. Beautiful, yes. Versatile across eighteen different platform requirements? Absolutely not.

This is not a niche problem. There are over four million self-published titles released every year, and a significant percentage of their authors are encountering the exact same wall. The cover art is done. The upload button is right there. And then the error messages begin.

Why "Just Resize It" Sounds Simple But Isn't

The instinct most people have is to open whatever image app is on their phone and drag a corner handle until the numbers look about right. This approach works the way duct-taping a exhaust pipe works. Technically something happened, but you have not solved the actual problem.

The Specification Cheat Sheet Every Self-Publisher Needs

Before touching any tool, you need the numbers. Here is a practical reference for the most common platforms in 2026:

  • Kindle eBook cover: 2560x1600 pixels (1.6:1 ratio), JPEG, under 50MB
  • KDP Paperback cover: Variable based on page count and trim size. Use their cover calculator, then export at 300 DPI with bleed. A standard 6x9 with 300 pages needs roughly 3174x2775 pixels for the full wrap.
  • Audiobook (ACX, Findaway): 3000x3000 pixels, JPEG, square format only
  • Apple Books: Minimum 1400x1873, recommended 2800x3746
  • Smashwords / Draft2Digital: 1600x2400 pixels recommended
  • Goodreads author profile: 98x98 pixels for thumbnail, 660x660 for full display
  • BookBub featured deal image: 300x450 pixels, which is where most people discover their master file does not scale down gracefully

Notice that this list spans from 98 pixels to over 3000 pixels, covers both portrait and perfect square orientations, and includes at least two different aspect ratios. One master file, no matter how lovingly rendered by a Prague artist, is not going to cover all of these without some intentional resizing.

This means you have three choices: crop out parts of your cover art (usually fine if the composition allows it), add a background color or texture to pad the sides (more work but preserves the original art), or just submit the wrong aspect ratio and watch the platform auto-crop something unintentional, like your title, directly into the void.

With exact dimension control, you can at least make an informed decision about which pixels survive the transition to square format. Set it to 3000x3000, see what happens to your composition, and adjust from there rather than being surprised by an algorithm's crop choice.

One More Thing About Print

If you are going to print, pixel dimensions alone are not the complete story. A 2400x3600 pixel image printed at 72 DPI looks catastrophic. The same file at 300 DPI is a different experience entirely. The relationship is: print size in inches times DPI equals pixel dimension needed. A 6x9 cover at 300 DPI needs 1800x2700 pixels as an absolute minimum. Most professional printers want more buffer than that.
